Bringing families back around the table at Cumbernauld

For many families, going out for a meal is something simple. Something you don’t think twice about. But when someone you love lives in a care home, those moments can sometimes become harder to recreate.

At Cumbernauld Care Home, the team have found a way to bring that experience back for all. The dining rooms have been transformed into warm, restaurant-style spaces, with dressed tables, familiar crockery brought in from home, and the gentle buzz of conversation filling the room. It’s all part of a ‘Come Dine With Me’ experience designed to feel less like an event and more like a night out together. And it’s working.

Families enjoying the experience at Cumbernauld Care Home

One family member shared:

“Yes, dad had a good time… compliments to the chef!”

 Another added:

“The whole experience is great. I definitely recommend to families. 10/10.”

It’s what happens around the table that matters most and for us, it looks like families sitting side by side again, conversations flowing and residents relaxing into the moment and simply enjoying time together.

The small details have made a big difference. Glassware from home and favourite table settings. Thoughtful touches that turn a dining room into something more personal and familiar.

And the impact doesn’t stop once the event is over. Our team have seen residents who take part becoming more engaged in daily life, specifically  joining in more, connecting with others and carrying that sense of togetherness into the days that follow. Home Manager Nicola McCormick explains:

Back together at the table.

“For some of our residents, going out for a meal with family regularly isn’t always possible. This brings that experience back in a way that feels comfortable and special.

What we’re really seeing is the joy of spending time together again and that’s where the real impact is.”

The idea has quickly become a favourite within the home and residents are actively involved, enjoying the build-up, the atmosphere, and the sense of occasion it brings.

Families are reconnecting. Moments are being created that feel normal again.

Because sometimes, it’s not about doing something new. It’s just about bringing back something that mattered all along.
