Residents at Cumbernauld Care Home in North Lanarkshire have a new date in their calendar each month, after a trial chair yoga class was so well received that it is now becoming a regular session.
The class was led by Audrey from Yoga with Audrey. With soothing music playing, residents followed her through gentle stretches, slow movements and breathing exercises, all from the comfort and support of a chair.
Audrey said: “I take all the poses I teach in a regular class and adapt them for the chair, which offers support and puts no pressure on the joints.”
Residents described the trial as calm and uplifting. Jean found it “peaceful and calming”, Bill said the atmosphere was “lovely”, and Betty enjoyed the music. William described Audrey as “a lovely lady with a calm voice.”
Susan said: “It was lovely to try something new. The movements were gentle and easy to follow, and after the class I felt lighter and left with a smile on my face.”
Audrey hopes the monthly sessions will help residents build strength, balance and mobility, though she says the calm they bring is what she values most.
She said: “More than anything, I love to see the way yoga can bring peace and calmness to the residents. It is so rewarding to teach something I love to people who are getting so much from the practice.”
Kim, Wellbeing Lead at Cumbernauld Care Home, said: “The yoga was fantastic, such a relaxing activity. Our residents fully embraced something new.”
We’re now welcoming new residents for compassionate residential, nursing, dementia, palliative and respite care and would love to show you around.
