The Abbeys residents take to the ice at Doncaster Dome

Betty, Margaret and Joyce from The Abbeys Care Home in Rotherham went ice skating for the very first time, joining an accessible session at Doncaster Dome.

The team arranged the trip as part of their ongoing work to help residents try new things. The three ladies skated in their wheelchairs and giggled all the way round the rink.

All three said they loved the sense of freedom out on the ice. For Joyce, the best part of the day was watching the children whizz past.

When the session finished, the group warmed up with a cup of tea, although each of them said they would have liked five more minutes on the ice first.

J’amie, Home Manager at The Abbeys, said: “It was lovely to see Betty, Margaret and Joyce out on the ice and having such a good time. None of them had skated before and they were laughing the whole way round. We want our residents to keep trying new things, so we look for ways to make that happen! I’m sure they’ll be back on the ice before too long.”

Emma, Wellbeing Lead, said: “The children were speeding past and the ladies loved watching them. There was an amazing atmosphere and the residents were chatting about it for days afterwards.”

Paul Chambers, whose mum lives at The Abbeys, said: “Haven’t seen mum smiling like that in a long, long time. Thank you for all you do, it means the world.”

The team at The Abbeys take time to learn what matters to each resident and help make their wishes happen.
