Growing Together: Richard Helped Us See Things Differently
Richard knows his plants. You’ll often find him in the garden chatting with our wonderful volunteer gardener Brian, gently (and very politely) asking him to leave certain weeds alone. To Richard, they’re important plants that bloom into beautiful flowers, crucial for birds, pollinators and biodiversity. He can name every one and their latin name too. They matter to Richard and Richard helped us see why they should matter to us too.

Inspired by his knowledge, our Wellbeing Lead Tracey suggested we create a sensory wildflower garden, The Bee Garden, with Richard in mind. A space where all kinds of plants can grow and he can cultivate and care for the ones he knows and loves.
The grass is ready to be toiled, the seeds soon to be sown. Residents have already painted the entry arch, covered with bees they’ve carefully designed by hand.

What’s a weed to one person might be a favourite species to another and the little corner of the garden is a place that reflects just that. Richard’s story is a reminder of what person-centred care really means. It’s recognising where someone’s purpose lies, learning from them and creating opportunities for them to keep doing what they love.
