An Ice Cream Van Visit Brings Childhood Stories

At Each Other Care, we’re always looking for ways to support connection, whether it’s a quiet chat, a walk with a friend, or a 99 with strawberry sauce and a flake.

Last week at Cumbernauld Care Home, residents and staff enjoyed a special treat when the ice cream van pulled into the car park. As soon as the familiar jingle played, it wasn’t long before everyone had made their way outside. The van served up all their favourites; soft cones, flakes, every kind of sauce and sprinkles.

The visit brought back fond memories, with residents chatting about waiting for the van as children and how they would trade ginger bottles for a few pennies to spend on sweets. Wellbeing Lead Kim brought in a few old bottles that sparked even more conversation about growing up in Glasgow and the small traditions that shaped daily life.

“It was such a lovely morning,” Kim said. “Everyone lit up when they heard the van. You could feel the excitement. It gave people something to look forward to and something to talk about all day.”

Simple activities like these help create relationships. They spark conversation, support emotional wellbeing and provide opportunities for residents and the team to share stories with one another.

For a little while, we all felt like children again. And at Cumbernauld Care, we’ll always make time for that.
