Using Film Cameras to Capture the Moment

Here at Each Other Care, film cameras have been making their way around our care homes, recording meaningful moments this festive season.

Residents, loved ones and team members were invited to take part to capture moments that felt important to them. Moments worth holding onto.

For many of our residents, this is how photography once felt. The click of the shutter. The pause before winding the film forward. A familiar rhythm that brings back weddings and christenings, holidays and birthdays. Life as it was lived and remembered.

As with all our work, the idea was grounded in research. The nostalgic, sensory experience of winding the film, looking through the viewfinder and pressing the shutter prompts conversation, memory and emotional connection.

For people living with dementia, familiar actions from the past can surface stories and feelings that might otherwise remain unspoken.

Over several weeks, the camera passed from hand to hand. Capturing ordinary, meaningful moments of daily life through the eyes of the people who live and work here. There’s a quiet anticipation in waiting to see what’s been captured once the film is developed.

The photographs will feature on this year’s Christmas card and be displayed around our homes. A shared story of who we are here at Each Other Care and we’re proud to share a snapshot of some of the wonderful moments captured here:
