Using Research-led Design To Transform Wellbeing
From the way we welcome those living with us into our home, to the furniture and environments we create, each step is considered on the merit of research, innovation and continuous feedback from those we support.
We've recently embraced cutting-edge dementia research from the University of Stirling's Dementia Services Development Centre to support our dementia spaces within our homes after being inspired about how their work has shaped a new chapter in care home design. This is one where the physical environment plays a powerful role in supporting memory, easing anxiety and supporting independence. Here at Each Other Care, we've turned this research into reality.
Our collaboration with a leading dementia-friendly furniture supplier allows us to translate this science into living, breathing spaces that feel like home. Our research-backed and industry approved furniture and aesthetics reflect the University's proven design principles when designing dementia-friendly furniture. These principles include calm colour contrasts for visual clarity, supportive seating for ease and dignity and layouts that naturally encourage movement and orientation. In addition to this, we take time to source sound-absorbing wooden panels to suit the acoustics of the rooms. Sound-proofing reduces background noise and harsh sounds, helping people with dementia feel focus more easily without becoming overwhelmed. By creating quieter, acoustically balanced spaces, we improve clear communication channels within our homes and supports a sense of safety and control.
The impact has been overwhelmingly positive for our residents and loved ones. Taking recent feedback, residents feel more settled, calm and in control of their shared living space. Spaces are now therapeutically designed to support those who choose to live with us emotionally and cognitively. Subtle changes such as the placement of a chair by a window or a clear visual cue in a corridor, have been seen to reduce confusion, promote better sleep and improved social engagement.
This innovation in care through thoughtful, evidence-led environments is shaped by us considering the six human needs when considering what a meaningful life entails. What makes the impact so powerful at Each Other Care is that it's also guided by our values of creating relationships and being there for each other.
We're here to raise the bar in dementia innovation, where research is used to support better outcomes. As part of our strong feedback culture, we'll continue evolving, listening and leading the way.
