Burns Day Celebrations at Benholm

The sound of bagpipes filled the air in Benholm Care Home as the shared community celebrated Burns Day, commemorating the life and works of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns.

13-year-old Lachlan Rennie played the role of the piper to honour his Grandad Mike, a much-loved resident. As a proud member of the National Youth Pipe band for Scotland, Lachlan put on an outstanding performance, moving many to tears. Pipe music is a significant part of Scottish heritage and it was a pleasure to make the occasion as special as possible for valued residents and families.

Lachlan’s Mum Tracey tells us more:

“Lachlan is such a talented musician and had the honour of playing alongside the highly acclaimed Spanish musician Carlos Nunez recently. His talents are endless and being able to perform in front of his Grandad at Benholm for Burns Day was a special moment. It was extremely poignant for us all.”

An Emotive Day

Manager Carol and team members were keen to create a full sensory experience and so the lights were dimmed for the Ode to the Haggis. The impact of the music in the low-lit room was particularly profound. Residents thoroughly immersed themselves in the power of the music and the performance.

Brian Tyndall delivered the Ode to the Haggis, dressed in a traditional kilt and jacket. Brian’s Mother Ella was a resident at Benholm in 2019 and since then Brian has continued Ella’s legacy by befriending residents and their families, supporting others in the same way that others supported him.

Brian explains:

“You can’t explain the warmth of being part of a larger family within the care home community. I’ve found solace in the Benholm family.”

Our Community Spirit

Brian plans to become an Activities volunteer at the home in the future, ensuring that the legacy of love and connection he experienced during his mother's time at Benholm lives on.

The Burns Day celebration was testament to the power of community; a day cherished in the hearts of all who were there.
