Forfar Pupils Help Residents Build a Memory Tree
Primary 7 pupils visiting Benholm Care in Forfar have embarked on a year-long arts and crafts project that will see them work alongside residents to create a memory tree which will be a reminder of the friendships formed during their final year of primary school.
The papier-mâché tree, which the children and residents began creating this week, will be decorated throughout the year with reflections from their time spent together.
Children from Langlands Primary School visit the care home fortnightly to spend time with residents. Each year, a new group of year 6 pupils takes part in the programme, which means the memory tree will be an ongoing project which captures thoughts, stories and experiences from different children and the residents as they take part in the project.
Just like the real trees in the forest, this beautiful tree will evolve through the changing seasons and years and serve as a lovely reminder of lives intertwined and experiences shared, between the older and younger generations.
The visits have become a highlight for both residents and pupils. Last year's Primary 7 class left handwritten notes which inspired this year’s project. They described their experiences, with comments including: "I loved spending time with the elders and playing games with them," and "I gained confidence to start conversation with the residents." Another child wrote: "I will miss you so much, thank you for having so much memories!"
Set within beautiful grounds, Benholm Care is located on Glamis Road in Forfar and supports those who require residential, respite, nursing and dementia care.
