Growing Together: Support Shaped By Understanding

Maureen lives with dementia and finds comfort in movement. She often prefers her own space and enjoys spending time walking with our team around the home and in the garden.

At our VE Day party, we supported Maureen seating her near Connie. As soon as Connie held her hand, there was a quiet sense of understanding between them. For the first time in a long while, Maureen remained seated alongside other residents, swaying to the music and singing with her new friend.

Connie finds purpose in helping others feel settled and her calm presence created a space that felt safe and familiar for Maureen, who was relaxed and engaged and connected to those around her.

For people living with dementia, meaningful social connection supports emotional regulation and reduces anxiety. Music and movement also stimulate areas of the brain linked to memory and wellbeing.

We’ve seen that Maureen responds noticeably to Connie and we’re now using that understanding to guide how we support her day to day. Whether it’s sitting together during mealtimes or taking part in activities, we’ll continue to build on the friendship that brings Maureen calm, Connie a sense of meaning and offers connection for them both.

A Each Other Care, growth happens with the shared understanding of what those who choose to live with us need to feel safe, supported and happy.
