Growing Together: Vivien’s Small Steps Make a Big Difference
At Each Other Care, person-centred care means recognising what matters to each person and supporting those who choose to live with us to keep setting goals, building confidence and enjoying life, one step at a time.
For Vivien at Highfield Hall in Haslingden, that step forward came on her birthday. More recently, Vivien has preferred the comforts of our shared home community rather than going on trips and felt a little apprehensive about heading out in a larger group. Wellbeing Lead Diane could see that with gentle encouragement and a small change in approach, Vivien’s confidence might start to grow. So she offered her a quieter option where just the two of them would take a trip to St Peter’s Church for a tea and toast morning.
Vivien didn’t need to think twice. She was ready to go before the car keys were even in Diane’s hand.
Vivien knows the local community well and she beamed when they arrived at the church to a lovely welcome from so many familiar faces. The visit was made particularly meaningful when the congregation burst into song with a chorus of “Happy Birthday”, with the church organ playing behind them.

On the journey back to Highfield Hall, Diane took the long way home so that they could enjoy views of the Haslingden countryside. Vivien looked out at the hills and said:
“Don’t we live in a lovely place. We don’t realise how lucky we are.”
These kinds of experiences show the importance of listening, adapting and supporting each person to enjoy what matters most to them.
Vivien continues to enjoy time spent in the community at her own pace and for now, that means one-to-one trips. And that’s more than okay. Person-centred care is about doing what’s right for you and for Vivien, that quiet ‘yes’ was the start of something special and we’re proud to see her confidence grow.
